ABB Motor Nameplate, Manual Motor Starters, and Stepper vs Servo: A Procurement Checklist

An admin buyer's practical checklist for sourcing ABB motors: how to read an ABB motor nameplate, choose an ABB manual motor starter, and avoid confusing an industrial servo motor with a micro stepper motor.

I'm the office administrator who places purchase orders for a 120-person industrial service company. Since 2021, I have managed roughly $300,000 in yearly MRO buying across 15 suppliers. I am not an engineer and I don't design control panels. But after a few expensive mistakes, I know that the person writing the PO can prevent most ABB motor ordering problems just by asking the right questions before sending a quote request.

One example: in 2023, I ordered a replacement motor from an old invoice instead of walking out to the motor and taking a new photo. I still kick myself for that. The frame fit, but the motor nameplate showed a 575 V motor while our plant was running 460 V. The order became a restocking fee and a three-week delay. 1. Read the ABB motor nameplate before calling a supplier

According to IEC 60034 (iec.ch), the motor nameplate is the standardized source of rated performance data. It also tells a supplier which version of the motor you have. Do not rely on the old PO. ABB has many mechanical and electrical variations that look almost identical from the outside.

Take a clear photo with your phone and keep it in the work order. The photo alone helps a distributor spot an earlier revision or a non-standard voltage winding.

Minimum fields to record

  • Full ABB product code or type code -- this is the primary identity. 'ABB motor' is not enough to order from.
  • Output power in kW or HP.
  • Voltage and full-load amps (FLA) -- if the nameplate lists multiple voltages, record the voltage your site will actually use.
  • Speed or number of poles -- for example, nominal 1765 rpm is usually a 4-pole motor; 3500 rpm is usually 2-pole.
  • Enclosure, IP rating, insulation class, and duty rating -- these matter for harsh environments and continuous running.

If the motor is part of an OEM machine and you cannot read the full code, send the photo anyway. In 2024, a supplier helped me identify a motor that had been re-ordered incorrectly for three years simply because someone photographed the old nameplate instead of transcribing only part of it.

2. Match the motor to an ABB manual motor starter

Once the motor data is clear, the next common request is an ABB manual motor starter. A manual motor starter is not a soft starter and not a VFD. It is a compact manual device that provides switching, overload protection, and in many cases short-circuit protection for a motor branch circuit. ABB manual motor starters are widely used in industrial control panels and are also called manual motor protective switches in some catalogs.

The important number is full-load amps, not just horsepower. An ABB motor nameplate with FLA of 7.6 A at 460 V needs a starter whose adjustable current range includes 7.6 A. A starter rated for a bigger motor might reset or trip incorrectly. A starter rated too low will shut down the motor at normal load.

The mistake I see most often in procurement: picking a manual motor starter by horsepower only. Horsepower gets you into the ballpark. Full-load amps gets you to the actual part. If the nameplate says dual voltage, also confirm which FLA applies to the line voltage you are using. I can't tell you which exact ABB manual motor starter model to use without seeing the full motor data, upstream protection, and panel duty. What I can tell you is that ordering before you have those details is a red flag.

When you send the RFQ, include the starter voltage rating, frame size if there is one, and the motor FLA. Ask the supplier to confirm the short-circuit current rating with your upstream protection device. That step has saved us from installing the wrong protective device more than once.

3. If the request says ABB motor for a motion axis, ask whether it is an industrial servo motor

Sometimes the ABB motor request is not for a pump or fan. It is for a motion control axis in packaging equipment, a robotic arm, or a precision positioning table. In that case, the standard induction motor checklist only gets you part of the way. You need to know whether the design uses an industrial servo motor or a stepper motor.

What's a stepper motor?

The plain-English answer: a stepper motor is a brushless motor that moves in discrete steps. Each electrical pulse from the drive rotates the shaft by a fixed amount, often 1.8 degrees per step. Because the movement is linked to pulse count, simple open-loop positioning systems can hold position without an encoder.

A micro stepper motor is not always a distinct motor category. In practice, that phrase usually means a compact stepper motor, often in a NEMA 8, 11, 14, or 17 frame, with a drive capable of microstepping. Microstepping subdivides each full step electronically to smooth motion and improve resolution. The motor still has the same basic step angle; the drive is doing the math.

Industrial servo motor vs micro stepper motor

An industrial servo motor, by contrast, is designed for closed-loop control. It typically has an encoder or resolver, and the drive continuously corrects position, speed, and torque. Servo systems handle higher acceleration, changing loads, and more demanding motion profiles. They are usually more expensive and require matching the motor with the correct drive, feedback cable, and tuning parameters.

If a BOM simply says 'micro stepper motor' with no drive type, do not place the order yet. Ask for the step angle or NEMA frame size, holding torque, current per phase, and whether the motor includes a leadwire connector or an encoder. A micro stepper motor without a matching drive is not an interchangeable part.

Also, don't ask me to put an ABB manual motor starter on a stepper motor line the same way you would for an induction motor. Motion axes usually have protection built into the drive. If a manual motor starter is needed upstream, that is a panel-design question for someone who can calculate coordination, not a purchasing shortcut.

4. Create a cross-reference sheet before the line gets dark

The final step is documentation. When all the approvals are done, our engineering team no longer wants to search for motor information in three different email chains. I put the key data in one quick-sheet.

  • Equipment asset number or line name
  • ABB motor type code and nameplate photo
  • Nameplate voltage and full-load amps
  • ABB manual motor starter order code and current range
  • Servo drive or stepper drive make and model if applicable
  • Quote date, price, and lead time

This looks obvious, but it is the one thing that has saved us the most money. In Q2 2024, we had to replace a machine servo motor over a holiday weekend. The cross-reference sheet had been updated by the previous buyer, so we knew the exact motor and drive part numbers. The only quote we had to chase was the price, not the part identity.

If you are working with a distributor, ask them to include the current replacement part number and the date of the quote. Prices change. Product codes get superseded. According to ABB's online library at library.abb.com, many older motor series have current replacement versions with different ordering codes. Without that documentation, you may end up buying inventory that is already obsolete.

Final warnings from a non-engineer who has made these mistakes

This worked for us in a mid-size MRO environment with mostly North American 460 V/60 Hz equipment. Your situation may be different if you are buying for 50 Hz IEC machines, for an OEM panel builder, or for hazardous locations. I can only speak to my own sample: about 200 motor and starter transactions over four years.

My mixed feelings about spare starters are worth mentioning. Part of me wants to stock every critical ABB manual motor starter as a spare. Another part knows that keeping the wrong revision in stock creates false confidence. The compromise is to stock only one verified spare for critical production lines and to include a photo of the installed nameplate in the bin location.

Bottom line: read the ABB motor nameplate, size the ABB manual motor starter from FLA, confirm whether you need an industrial servo motor or a micro stepper motor, then document everything. That checklist won't make you a design engineer. It will make you a buyer who stops ordering expensive mistakes.
